Food Safety Working Group

Details

The Food Safety Working Group (2016-2017) surveyed the metrics used for measures relevant to food safety and foodborne disease, with the aim to advance knowledge and scientific understanding among the global research community of methods and metrics relating to food safety. The working group on food safety was tasked to:

  • Review the metrics, tools, definitions and software platforms currently used in food safety research, with application to low and middle income countries;
  • Produce a summary of current gaps and challenges related to the use of these metrics;
  • Suggest additional metrics and refinements to existing methods that would help make research on food safety in low and middle income countries more robust and replicable; and
  • Identify needs and opportunities for extending research on food safety in low and middle income countries.

The group produced two reports - a technical brief and an extended working paper - that synthesised the range of metrics available for measuring and monitoring food safety, with a focus on LMIC-contexts. These outputs are designed to help researchers identify areas for further research, whilst offering an overview of existing tools and protocols to policymakers and practitioners. The technical brief was published on the UK government website. Click on the Altmetric donut below to explore engagement with the technical brief.
